Simply the best over-head " Action RPG " scrolling game of its type.
Made by the same people who brought us Balders Gate on the PS2, it improves so much on this series and adds up to 4 players via a multi-tap.
Yes there are some negative comments to make, for instance the loading times are dire and it is a game which seems to crash frequently ( definatley save as much as possible to avoid screaming at your PS2 . )
I've also found that having 2 players or more leads to one of the many bosses to focus on one player - who can stand and block whilst the others can plummel away without worry of being attacked.
The graphics are great, it has the trademark water ripple effects from the Balders Gate series, the effects from the weaponary is great, from the frost shocks to the electrical crackling along your staff or sword.
You can select male or female version of wizard, elf, cleric, warrior classes, even better, some of the weapons and armour are class-specific, I picked up a 116 rated armour....and to find that it could only be worn by a wizard, och !
Players can be added / removed at any point, great if one of your mates has to leave during a session, there is partial create a character at the beginnning of the game, but we are not talking on the same basis as the Smackdown series, sorry.
The bad guys are varied, as are the levels and the puzzle solving is limited, collect an item and return it to someone who sent you on the quest.
The replay factor is very high, complete it on easy mode and try normal - the difficult goes right up and your character who could clear a screen full of bad guys on easy, will be running for cover to take a health potion on medium.
I've completed the game and returned time and time again, always searching for unique items, better weapons, a helmet or better boots. The is so much to customise, add fire or poison to your weapon or pick up a amulet which once worn increases you mana regeneration by 20%, you will be collecting everything from teasure chests and dropped by others to search for better items, compulsive action !
I have no access for on-line gaming so cannot comment on it, yet single or co-operative modes are fantastic and i havent stopped playing for 6 months now !
Even better, the follow up is on its way and you should be able to load up any saved games from this one and use your character in the sequel.
